  • Pharmaceuticals, chemicals, oil & gas, mining, food & beverage, and semiconductor manufacturing – all benefit from recovering high‑purity water and valuable by‑products.

Challenges and Innovations

ZLD is still capital‑ and energy‑intensive. Thermal processes like evaporation and crystallisation consume significant electricity, and membrane fouling from scaling salts can increase maintenance. However, new technologies are addressing these hurdles:

  • AI and IoT – machine learning optimises chemical dosing, predicts membrane cleaning cycles, and reduces energy use by up to 30%.

  • Hybrid membrane‑thermal systems – treat only 5‑10% of the flow thermally, slashing energy demand.

  • Waste‑heat integration – using flue gas or other waste heat to power evaporation cuts operating costs.

  • Chemical‑free anti‑scaling – novel strategies prevent unwanted crystallisation without extra additives.
