Falling Film Evaporator
A falling film evaporator is an industrial device used to concentrate solutions, particularly viscous liquids. This type of evaporator is characterized by its scalability, suitability for heat-sensitive products, and energy efficiency. While other types of evaporators may be more suitable for particular applications, the right evaporator type can help businesses optimize their production processes. In this article, we will discuss the unique operational principles and maintenance needs of falling film evaporators, as well as their distinct advantages and benefits.
The falling film evaporator is a tube bundle-based heat exchanger that utilizes gravity and a thin liquid film to evaporate a solution. This type of evaporator is commonly found in food, desalination, and other industrial sectors. A falling film evaporator has many advantages over other types of evaporators, including high heat transfer efficiency and low operating costs.
Evaporation takes place on the surface of a thin liquid film, which is spread evenly over the heating surfaces. The low residence time of the liquid film reduces thermal degradation and salting, making this type of evaporator ideal for heat-sensitive products. This type of evaporator also has the advantage of being able to operate under deep vacuum conditions.
High heat transfer efficiency is the primary reason why falling film evaporators are so popular in various industries. The large surface area of the thin liquid film allows for rapid heat exchange, resulting in faster evaporation rates and improved separation efficiency. The low temperature difference between the heating medium and process stream further increases the rate of evaporation.
In addition to heat transfer efficiency, falling film evaporators are known for their durability and reliability. Their sturdy construction and robust design make them an excellent choice for use in harsh environments and demanding industrial applications. Moreover, falling film evaporators are highly scalable and can be easily configured in multiple stages to increase production capacity.
Unlike other evaporator technologies, the falling film evaporator can be designed for continuous operation with little maintenance or downtime. This feature makes it an excellent option for processes that require uninterrupted production and high distillate-to-concentrate ratios.
However, to achieve optimal performance, the falling film evaporator must be properly designed. Insufficient distribution of the liquid feed over the heating surfaces can cause uneven wetting and fouling, which negatively affects the film thickness and heat transfer efficiency. It is important to select an appropriate distributor to ensure uniform distribution and consistent liquid film thickness throughout the entire tube bundle.
Another important aspect of the falling film evaporator is its ability to handle low-viscosity liquids. This characteristic makes it an excellent choice for processing foods and other viscous products that are prone to degradation. Additionally, it is easy to modify falling film evaporators for higher viscosity fluids, making them an ideal choice for many applications.
A good design requires a precise calculation of the heat transfer area to determine the required dimensions of the tube bundle. Several correlations are available to estimate the heat transfer area, but most of them are limited in terms of temperature range and accuracy. Consequently, they are typically extrapolated to lower temperatures. We have developed a new correlation that captures the falling film evaporation zone at lower temperatures and boosts heat transfer 2-3 fold.
